Read about our plans to expand our leadership in 2020 and beyond!
Last week we shared the work we plan to do in 2020 to build a more financially sustainable organization.
Today, we’re telling you about one of the other areas we’ll focus on during our Germination Year: Leadership.
The Body Political started as a dream to produce a one-off show focused on the body.
Over the past four years, our once small dream has transformed into a 501(c)3 non-profit. We’ve produced eight shows, and have worked with 70 performers. Our goal of creating a show that simply focused on the body has deepened to amplifying untold stories of the body by highlighting marginalized performers.
As The Body Political’s mission evolves, it’s become clear that two white women shouldn’t be at the helm of an organization whose mission is to center marginalized identities and experiences, especially POC.
Knowing this, we are preparing for a leadership transition in the coming years. This transition informs how we make decisions and the people we bring into the organization now.
We’ve identified two core challenges when it comes to the leadership of the organization. They are:
- Not enough capacity: We simply don’t have enough people to implement and execute everything that needs to get done. The Body Political is a volunteer run organization, which means that everyone involved has limited time, and skills, to give.
- Not enough diversity of perspectives and experiences: We know there are areas where we can do better and we also recognize that we aren’t experts in what other communities need. We want The Body Political to be a safe space for ALL performers and that means including more voices in the organization’s leadership.
During our Germination Year we will identify perspectives that we’re missing in our leadership, invite them to join the organization, and prepare for a leadership transition, so that we can better reflect and serve our community.
We are so excited to announce that we have already started some of this work by expanding our Board! Our new Board members are Tas Al-Ghul and Emjay Mercury and our Board president, Jet Noir, is joining us for another term. You can read more about our Board here.
